Exhibition Microsite

Instructions

  1. Select a cultural institution located in the Bay Area.
  2. Curate a selection of projects that might exist in that space.
  3. Create a microsite showcasing the work in that exhibition.

Goals

For step one, try to determine the tone and focus of your selection. All cultural institutions focus on a particular type of content. This content might be very broad, such as the SF MOMA's inclusion of work from all media from 1920–present. Or, this content might be specific, such Asian Art Museum's focus on Asian art and culture.

Once you understand the tenor of that space, you can then focus on curating an exhibition that might be shown within those walls. For example, by understanding that SF MOMA houses modern and contemporary art, I can create an exhibition that focuses on work by a single artist like Cindy Sherman; or create a collection of pieces such as Graphic Design History.

Finally, your microsite should highlight these works. How can you showcase the theme of your exhibit? How can you explore different ways of showing the tone? Should it be legible? Formal? Ambient? Obtuse?

I'd strongly recommend you contact and visit the institution of your choice. Try and speak to a curator there to learn how they design an exhibition within that institution.

Consider the ideal viewing conditions for your site. Are you literally representing the in-person experience online as in the case of 404 Error: The Object is Not Online? Are you meant to view your exhibition within the space on your phone like Minneapolis Sculpture Garden? Consider augmenting your website with a physical display.

Examples of cultural institutions in the Bay Area

If you'd like to invent your own institution, I'd encourage you to do so. If you'd like to choose an organization outside of the Bay Area, talk to me about it. Talk with your peers. Every student must have a different organization.
